We are using Engine Yard for a new application and have been very impressed with their service and support. We are yet to go live so I can not speak for the production side yet.

I've used Dreamhost, MediaTemple, and Sonnex -- and believe it or not I've not had any serious trouble with any of them. However, I also hear great things about TextDrive... Pick one, go with it, work with them.

I once considered Mediatemple GS, but then read some horror stories in several blogs (some related to rails), google should help you find them. The clustered containers were quite new at that time so things should have improved. From my own experience, shared hosting, whether clustered or on a single server, and especially for high traffic rails apps, is something you should avoid.

We've started out with one VPS over at Rimuhosting and have gradually added more servers over time and now have a few servers. Rimuhosting is great, especially their support is impecable. I would recommend them to everyone.

Rein said Rimu too.

I'm talking MediaTemple (GS) rather than (DS), though (DS) Is an option.

I just used MediaTemple's Dedicated Virtual server to launch an app. It was pretty easy. CentOS. Yay.

I've used TextDrive in the past, but I found it very slow.

Rails Machine is wonderful. :)

I have my own servers with Rimu Hosting. http://www.rimuhosting.com

I run on TextDrive myself, it's always been quite reliable but I haven't really stressed it yet so I couldn't say how it would be under load.
